Star Supremacy

Posted by – October 14, 2011

I’ve been playing the closed beta for several days now and thought I’d share my initial impressions of the game.

Star Supremacy is a browser online game which is currently in development and now is in closed beta testing. It plays similarly to other online conquest games like Travian, Ultima etc, but is relatively fast paced and has combat which the player can actively participate in and is in a space setting naturally!

The tutorial takes you through some very basic game activities and has some very useful rewards for getting yourself started off quickly. I would highly recommend no-one chooses to skip this as even having played through the tutorial the game can be a little overwhelming at first.

Once you have entered the game proper, there is a quest system which guides you through putting down basic structures on your home colony and by following those carrots you get a familiarity with most of the game’s mechanics. The main quest has objectives which give you direction right the way through the game, there are daily quests involving simple game activities like conquering a resource node, leveling a commander etc. Finally there Challenge quests, which reward things like joining and growing an alliance (player guild) or expanding your empire.

Your commanders control your ships and each colony has a commander who is that colonies leader. Each has five stats which govern how many ships they can control, how many colony activities can take place at once, build and research bonuses and combat bonuses. As you use your commanders in combat against npcs and players, they’ll level up and become more powerful. You can equip commanders with a wide variety of loot including item sets and differently tiered rarities of loot.

Colony activities take place over time, with buildings taking 10 to 20 minutes to construct and upgrade, growing to several hours as you make them more powerful. Once you’ve unlocked research a whole tech tree opens up, allowing you to research different buildings, ships, weapons and tech which improves the base capabilities of all those.

The main draw of Star Supremacy is the combat system. You can assign ships to a commander and then try to raid or conquer npc controlled resource nodes or go after another player. When your commander enters battle, you can choose to watch and participate by manually controlling which ships to deploy, use activated equipment abilities or to deploy fighters. It will all take place automatically, with the exception of activated equipment if you choose to let it, however each round is on a short timer so if you do want to make decisions you need to pay close attention. Your ships duke it out with the enemy and if you are victorious you can gain resources used to further your colony building, equipment for improving your commander, or items from the B-credit store.

The game is a micro transaction browser one, and as such has a credit item store. Items to accelerate building, improve resource input and speed along fleets and increase commander xp rate are all there. The game is generous in giving B-credits for being online and logging in each day so you will be able to gain a large amount of items to help your activity completely free. Also *all* of these items can be obtained as loot from combat and the game currently has quite a good drop rate. With the game being in closed-beta you cannot actually pay for any B-credits (the item shop currency).

With the game being in closed beta, there are bugs to be found, occasional server downtime and a lot of game mechanics which the players are all currently trying to figure out. The learning curve can seem a bit daunting at first, but plenty people are willing to help out and answer questions either via the in game chat or on the forums. The great thing about closed beta is the devs really seem on the ball and are taking suggestions and critics seriously. There are also several beta competitions running, which will reward players who submit the most bugs, suggest new research options etc.

This one has a lot of potential to be a fun, rewarding browser game! Hope you enjoyed the read :)

Indomitus

Posted by – June 8, 2011

Welcome to browser game Indomitus. In Indomitus, thousands of players are divided into one of four Tribes. You and thousands of other players in your Tribe must work together to defend and expand your Tribe.

What is a Tribe?

You automatically join a Tribe as soon as you enter the game. Your Tribe’s name appears under your name on the top-left panel. You can speak to your fellow patriots in the chat box at the bottom-left corner.

Tribe members join guilds and are lead by Guild Commanders. Guilds and Guild Commanders work together to ensure extra organization and camaraderie within the Tribe. Good Guild Commanders working together will lead your Tribe to victory.

How to Win?

Each Tribe starts with one Capital City and four smaller cities. Cities are the main targets in Indomitus. Your goal is to work together with other players in your Tribe and capture all cities on the map to win. Join a Guild early and follow the commands of your Guild Commander to lead attacks and capture more cities. Victory in this game requires the combination of great teamwork and excellent leadership.

Hundreds of players can send troops to participate in a single city siege, so planning, cunning strategy, and strong leadership within your Tribe are vital. An attack is only effective when it is well planned and well organized. Follow your leaders to succeed!

What should I do first?

As the game tutorial has briefly introduced, your first goal is to develop your first manor, recruit powerful heroes in the Altar of Heroes, join a guild, and establish new manors. Later on, you may want to research technology, and draft an army. We encourage you to follow the Missions while starting out, as they will guide you in greater detail on how to achieve the goals listed above.

Top Eleven

Posted by – May 13, 2011

Top Eleven is a football manager simulation game in which you have the opportunity to lead your own club through various competitions. You get the option to create your club’s identity, choose tactics, buy and sell the players, build up and upgrade your stadium along with other facilities as well as manage your finances.

Along these options, you get to compete with your friends and follow all the matches live.
Maximum amount of players you can have in your squad is 22. Eleven of those (as in Top Eleven) in the starting lineup, 5 on the bench and 6 more reserves. Each player has a number of stars to his name representing his average quality. The amount of stars each player gets also depends on the level of the league he is playing at. When you win a promotion to the higher league, your players drop one star. They do not become worse than they were before. This happens simply because the league is now better.
Players retire between age 32 and 34. The longest contract you can sign with each player is 3 seasons. You can extend it at any moment for another 3 seasons unless the player has announced that he is retiring at the end of the season. Player names are automatically generated from the name data base for every country. You can change each player’s name and nationality at the cost of some tokens.

Changing players’ position on the pitch is done by a simple drag and drop method. Same applies for substitutions. Browsing through your squad options, you can see a number of parameters and statistics that are related to your players. You can see player skills, his recent performances, contract details and so on.
Top Eleven already has a number of pre defined tactics (4-4-2, 3-5-2, 3-4-3 etc.) that you can select simply by clicking on the tactics button. It is also possible to create and save tactics of your own.

Culture

Culture is the primary measure of your Empire’s advancement. You need to reach the Culture peak for an Age to build a Wonder.

Gain Culture with high-level key structures and Luxuries. You’ll lose Culture if you break agreements or breach treaties.

If you advance your Empire without a firm grounding you may find yourself in a weaker position in the future. Try to plan your advancement for an Age.

Your Empire’s flag is its identifying banner, by which other players recognise your Empire. Your flag appears on all your garrisons and in all communications with other Empires.

Your primary source of Gold income is taxation from your population, but you can also generate Gold from trade.
Gold Expenses

Research
Training units
Upkeep of the army
Transferring troops and resources with Caravans
Population

Each Settlement’s population is determined by various factors. The key factor is adequate housing. Buildings such as the Settlement Centre and Urban Housing expand your population.

Mood

You must carefully maintain the Mood of your people. A happy populace is productive, and is likely to have breakthroughs and surges of productivity. An unhappy populace may be less productive, and in extreme circumstance can revolt or riot.
Settling new Land

As your Empire progresses, you will need to seek out new land to settle. This is one of the primary routes for growth and expansion.

New Settlements must be placed in open spaces, away from garrisons or other Settlements. A new Settlement requires resources from its founding Settlement.

You can support and reinforce Settlements easier if they’re closer to your centre of power. Place Settlements central to key Luxury and Resource locations to minimise marching distance.

Research Buildings

Your Research is supported by the centres of Research throughout your Empire, and each Research structure (such as a Library) contributes to your Research goals. See List of Research Structures.

Some Wonders and other factors affect the rate of Research.

Each Research topic has prerequisite topics, as well as an Effort and Gold cost. The Gold cost is fixed and does not normally change. The Effort determines the time the Research will take, and is affected by factors such as the number and level of your Empire’s Research structures.

Research topics often require that you have at least one Research structure of a given level.

Setting a Path

The longer an assumption stands, the more likely it is to be accepted as law, so any topics not researched for two Ages are locked. This means that no topics from any Age prior to your last Age can be researched.

At the start of an Age, look for any Research lines that cross into the next Age. This may strongly impact your choice of what to Research first.

Browser MMO Golden Age

Posted by – May 4, 2011

Golden Age, developed by China-based Giant Games and published by Aeria Games, is a free online browser MMO game that requires no download. You will have a medieval risk-taking role to play in accordance with the guidance of an ancient star atlas, from the Old World to a mysterious golden Kingdom by sailing.

In Golden Age, you can choose three races to start your gaming journey -Yibei Luo Union, standing for the ancient Greece’s republican politics and parliamentary system; the Knights Templar, the descendants of the Crusaders, the embodiment of the piety and bravery; as well as Rhine Chamber of Commerce, the emerging industrial sectors respectively. In addition to the three major racial characteristics, the architecture of the castle, the army— both have their own characteristics. When you reach a certain level in the game, you will be rewarded with a castle and became a lord in the Golden this continent!

In today’s cookie-cutter copycats that dominate the web game market, plagiarism has been a constant formula in the tide of browser games. However, the Golden Land, has injected some fresh blood into browser game market from the game character, troops, combat system, and resource system—— all of them have their own originality.

When it comes to the game artworks, building style and character’s costumes, the Giant artist team carefully craft and fashion the works based on the original medieval style.

In Golden Age, the adventurer, knight, the Governor, the homeless, and bankruptcy have all emerged as different style of business, while the Government House, the municipal square statue, and the castle of the lord immerse you wander in medieval towns . Moreover, The Administrative Region of the solemn, the bustling business district, the splendid plaza area – they all show the complete style of the medieval towns. If you are dreaming of being medieval knights and or being interested in medieval culture, you are bound to experience the golden kingdom.

And that was not all, in the fighting system as well as resource production systems, the Giant Team has modified and improved the system in reference to the similar browser game existing in the market. For example, a large number of interactive gaming systems such as the newly designed map, players in the game can always see the guild status, personal castle, as well as other player’s stats in the region. Well, if you are familiar with google earth map, then you are no longer a stranger for the “golden land” map.

With the most concerned battle system, the “Golden Age” planners try to optimize the game to avoid the emergence of various types of unfairness and unbalance, in a multi-troops, multi-racial situation, giving players more options with arms. Raid, siege, looting, and attacking in a variety of ways allow the players to maximize the more favorable choice in war tactics. Of course, in the gaming world, you will never fight alone, the game alliance system will be your strong back. The tribal system has its own characteristics, ensuring that each player could make a contribution to the Alliance.
